GCBA - Georgia Children's Book Awards and Conference on Children's Literature
CONFERENCE TESTIMONIALS
Where could I begin? I was an active part of the Conference for 7 years while at UGA working on my doctorate in the Language Ed Department (well, that was the name then...). I worked with Dr. Carol Fisher, sadly no longer with us though surely in all our hearts. My succeeding years teaching children's literature were all enriched with the personal contacts I made with authors during those years. My world is different because of this conference ... and hopefully, I've passed on the joy I received there to all my students over the years. I am no longer teaching, working full time as a ceramic artist. Of course, I am still an avid reader in the K-12 section of the library, and read regularly on the CHILD-LIT listserv to keep up to date. With the world of books being so radically affected by burgeoning technology, I am grateful to know that this Conference continues to thrive.

The Unquiet Librarian and Peter SisAnother wonderful aspect of the conference was seeing friends and professors from my graduate school days at UGA. I am incredibly blessed to know so many amazing teachers and librarians—reconnecting in person with these people was wonderfully heart-warming and inspiring. In the movie Field of Dreams, Dr. Archibald “Moonlight” Graham says: This is my most special place in all the world, Ray. Once a place touches you like this, the wind never blows so cold again. You feel for it, like it was your child. These words reflect how I feel about the University of Georgia—every time I have stepped onto that campus as a student and alumna, I have been overwhelmed by the energy that just radiates from the people in the College of Education—this weekend was no different! When I am on campus at UGA, I feel like anything is possible—the positive energy and intellectual freedom are truly liberating. My only regret is that I could not have more time with them.

The Children's Literature Conference has always been one of the highlights of my school year. After 41 years, I'm retired from school but not from conferences. I've sat next to Lloyd Alexander who couldn't eat because of stage fright. I've enjoyed the good humor of Tomie DePaola, the warmth of several times winner Robert Burch, the compassion of Patricia Polacco who brought me to tears, and many too numerous to mention. I've also served on the picture book selection committee and have been a presenter. I have become reacquainted with old friends and made new ones. Besides the books being a good place to start to engage my students each year, some of the authors were invited to my school which was always delightful. The conference has instilled in me so many memories. Books indeed are the start of many experiences, and I thank you for the journey.

The conference was awesome! We had a great time. It was low key, however had guest speakers that blew us away. The sessions that we attended were very beneficial as well. We went to one about picturing a classroom community that was AMAZING! The lunches were also very well organized and yummy. The guests that attended our session were so nice and really enjoyed meeting us. I called the day before our session to talk about room set up and Amanda was so helpful. She actually met us at the room to discuss what we wanted. The room looked great and overall I do not think it could have been a better conference. They were great about providing little snacks to keep up going as well.  :)
